These issues can lead to loss of life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bukola&nbsp;Bolarinwa&nbsp;has sickle cell disease requiring blood transfusions. She personally experienced the difficulty of getting blood in Nigeria, and so founded Haima Health Initiative (HHI) to address blood supply shortages and to save the lives of others, including fellow sickle cell disease sufferers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cOur mission is to make sure patients in hospitals across Nigeria get access to blood, when they need it, no matter where they are.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Bukola Bolarinwa<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p> HHI is a social enterprise that organises monthly blood donation drives and emergency response for patients in need of blood transfusions across six states in Nigeria. HHI addresses the shortage of blood supply for persons in need of blood due to inadequate voluntary blood donations, the prohibitive cost of acquiring blood and the absence of a centralised blood banking system in Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through its 24-hour helpline, WhatsApp, and online database, HHI connects voluntary donors to patients in need of blood. Haima responds to over five hundred blood requests every year with its advocacy that reaches over 10,000 people online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/queenscommonwealthtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HHI-Edited-3-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queenscommonwealthtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HHI-Edited-3-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/queenscommonwealthtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HHI-Edited-3-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/queenscommonwealthtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HHI-Edited-3-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/queenscommonwealthtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HHI-Edited-3.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Haima responds to over five hundred blood requests every year and its advocacy reaches over 10,000 people online.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HHI is among nineteen organisations that are currently enrolled on the Youth Ventures Programme (YVP). Through the YVP, QECT provides youth-led organisations with flexible funding, practical tools and technical support, and access to a global network of young leaders for 2+ years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With QECT\u2019s support since March 2022 HHI has been able to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launch&nbsp;Haima&nbsp;Mobile, a mobile blood delivery service, and work with 12 hospitals ensuring speedy access to blood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organise 26 blood drives that collected a total of 552 units of blood from donors in Kano, Lagos and Abuja cities of Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strengthen its organisation, with improvements to safeguarding, and a clearly defined strategic growth plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cQECT \u2018s YVP funding has made a significant difference to our impact.\u00a0This has allowed us to expand from collecting blood through donor\u00a0drives to improving the blood supply chain by delivering blood using\u00a0cold chain delivery bikes to patients and hospitals in Nigeria.\u201d<\/em>\u200b<\/p>\n<cite>Bukola Bolarinwa<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Future work supported by QECT in 2023:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HHI\u2019s goal is to further advocate for voluntary blood donations and to roll-out&nbsp;Haima&nbsp;Mobile services in 24 hospitals in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youth Ventures Programme - Bukola Bolarinwa, founder of  Haima Health Initiative\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q8K3bxkDB2o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you live in Nigeria and require a blood transfusion you may face the following issues: shortage of blood supply due to blood donation being culturally unusual, prohibitive cost of acquiring blood, and the absence of a centralised system to log and track the supply of blood.
